gtx 1060 or rx 480?
« on: August 20, 2016, 12:30:02 PM »
So ill start this off by saying that I am not up-to-date on any new or even recent pieces of hardware that are out right now. Now i have watched some comparisons and read some stuff about each of the cards, but the more posts i read and videos i watch, the more unsure i am about which card i wish to purchase. As of this moment, the gtx 1060 was slightly higher in most benchmarks that ive seen, but the reviewer constantly would follow it up with something about maybe the amd card is more "future proof." Im going to continue looking into this myself, but would appreciate any and all advice/replies.

What resolution do you game at? Is G-SYNC important to you?
Lower res I would pick the 6GB 1060 (not the 3GB which are lobotomized and lower performing.. think of them as 1060 lite... or 1050Ti instead of a 'true' 1060). Higher res would opt for the 480.
Gsync though is a game changer and AMD's freesync is not as capable.. but freesync monitors are cheaper.
If going the 480 route I would opt for a 3rd party like ASUS as they fixed the pcie slot issue (ie AMD stock 480s pull more than the 75watts the pcie slot is rated for).

Basically figure out what is important to you... and you really cant make a bad choice with either!

Other thing about the GTX 1060 you can not SLi them, as for RX 480 you can crossfire..
If you do go Rx 480 as GAK said, get like a Asus or HIS.

Nope USA RMAed a 7970 for someone a while back and it had to go to California.

Personally if getting the 480 I would go with Xfx or MSI both have great RMA teams and the XFX ones have a great back plate.

Price and monitor intentions need to play into this decision. The bottom line is that the gtx 1060 is faster (not much in DX12). If you have no plans to add a second GPU, then that lack of SLI option is not a big deal. If you want gsync or freesync monitors at some point, then do some research on it before you commit to a gpu (basically gsync is better, but you pay a hefty premium, freesync is quite good and has a minimal cost). And the final consideration is what pricing is like when you actually purchase. If there is a good deal on one or the other it could throw other considerations out the window.
