Title: Smart Phone / Plans advice
Post by: Arinoth on August 24, 2015, 08:56:23 AM
It's that time of the year, at least for me where my plan 2 year plan is going to be expiring shortly and I'm in the market for a new phone and plan. I am not quite sure what right now to replace my Nexus 4 with, as I don't think I need a 800$ Samsung Galaxy 6 phone since well, these days I think that's sort of overkill and I won't be power user-ing it that much.

I have been glancing at the Moto X Play, though not sure if I should wait to see what the next iteration of the Nexus phone looks like though it seems they've been getting progressively more expensive compared to the N4.

Another thing would be plans. I'm leaving Bell after a decent plan since I need Canada wide calling and I had to pay extra monthly with Bell in order to get this. I'd like to get a decent amount of data but I'd like to not spend 60$+ a month just for the plan. I wouldn't mind one of those data sharing plans that I've seen, but those still seem slightly overpriced. Maybe I was just spoiled in the past with plans having good data for their price?

I'm almost at that time of year to, though I'm likely sticking with Rogers myself unless I can find a better plan for 50$ that gives me over 500 megs of data with unlimited texting US and Canada. I really like my Sony Xperia ZL so thinking of upgrading to the Z3+ Dual as looking at the specs seems like a really good phone for what I use it for, and I like that it is waterproof seeing I have in the past dropped my phone into water on the beach or Pool and been pushed in occasionally.

What about looking at one of the Zen series phones new around $200-300 so not expensive and unlocked :)

for plans I am really bad as I always make the companies I work for cover my plan haha.

My kids use koodo and it seems reasonable

I'm with virgin, I pay $29 a month + data billed by the MB, usually ends up to be about $60 a month with 4-5GB of data used. I do not suggest the Z3+ dual, get the Z3 dual instead it has better performance. As for phones I don't suggest the moto x play either, it has a low end SoC comparable to the nexus 4, and only has 2GB of RAM. My suggestions on phones are as following, Budget: LG G3, Xperia Z3, HTC One M8, Moto X 2014. High end: LG G4, Xperia Z5 (should be out in a month or two), Nexus 5 2015 (rumored to be about $450), Nexus 6 2015.

Of all the phones I've owned I would suggest an LG or Sony device, my Z3 is crazy fast, Probably as smooth as a Nexus 5 running AOSP and the battery life is absolutely insane (9 hours screen on time!), and my old LG G3 had an amazing camera, removable battery, 2k screen res and better volume rockers/power button.

I looked at Virgin and wasn't sure how that math works out. If I read on their site 'correct' or potentially I didn't, it says 5$ for the first 250MB then 5$ every 250MB. How does that only come ot about 60$ a month for your entire boll, or did you mean it's the 29$ month + the 60 for data?

i'm not sure on the virgin plans, but i have to chime in for the LG G4, I have once since july, it's a fantastic phone. Super Fast great battery life and the camera is incredible.

Virgin sucks at calculating data so I pay less than what I actually use ;) a few times I've only been billed just the base price of $29.
