Cpu and ram are probably the safest in my opinion. GPUs are usually pretty good, but verify fans functioning and avoiding old mined on cards being the priority (unless priced appropriately). Motherboards have more that can go wrong, and ssd die with use, so they are what I am less likely to get used. That being said, I have no issues buying them used either if the price/situation make it worth it. Power supplies I would buy used if it’s a budget build, but only if it is a quality unit and not too old.

They need to do back into the computer they came from. My son was super excited to get it built and so I borrowed the PSU and GPU from another computer. Once the 1070 and PSU come from John then we will be able to officially finish the build.

Yeah at that price I would have bought ten, tested the shite out of them (to get any initial bad ones back to the store asap) and added to them my X or W NAS drive arrays.

My every night games with buddies are mostly FPS. apex (good for a slowly changing game and just jumping in and working with a group of 2 other buddies) Cod warzone ( like apex but on speed, lots more going on, and lots of fun and like apex it is free as well) for single or 2 player I really enjoyed farcry new dawn (Get a good buddy or older kid and play your way through this game, so much fun and great characters) doom eternal (other than the occasional platforming bits that are frustrating as hell, this is a solid shooter and tons of fun) fallout 4 with tons of mods (you can mod this game to be anything you want at this point) gears (another better with friends game and though it is short it is a lot of fun) PC halo games (it’s halo) metro exodus with expansions (the only game with stealth I enjoy, absolutely stunning story as well as beautiful areas and the expansion “sams story” though short is a must play. The main game has some of the coolest post apocalypse fun in any game with far more variety of characters, landscapes and challenges than say fallout) I am sure there are others haha

Today I upgrade my all-new office with The Arctic Z1 Monitor arm adding a 4K 43" screen to my test bench and making it so I can test and record 4k content much easier. The Z1 was a simple install and setup and works very nicely, the hub is simple but sleek and in all reality, Arctic did a great job. Very recent we took a long hard look at the hunter orange-clad LaCie Rugged SSD 1TB and walked away very impressed with what LaCie had created. That model was a USB 3.1 gen 2 beast. One which it was as rugged as it was fast. As we made mention in that review the LaCie Rugged SSD was not the premier/flagship ‘rugged’ model, rather the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro took that honors. Thanks to the good people at LaCie’s we can show you what this $399 (USD) 1TB model has to offer that the LaCie Rugged SSD series cannot. Without going too deep into things just yet, these differences vary from the subtle (better data protection) to the blatant (Thunderbolt 3 instead of USB interface) and are how LaCie was able to create a ‘Pro’ model which takes nothing away from the non-Pro variant. Instead is in and of itself a unique model worthy of its own special ‘pro’ moniker. This is rather refreshing as usually when companies create a pro and non-pro model variants… it is nothing more than a cash grab with only slight differences separating one from the other. That is not the case with the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro. There are indeed a lot of similarities but the obvious time and attention to detail makes this a new and different external storage device. Different in a good way. We will go over the ins and outs of what has and has not changed, but with an asking price a hundred dollars more than the non-Pro model, the burning question everyone will have is simple: is this price difference justified? Is this model really that much better than the LaCie Rugged SSD? Considering how potent and robust the non-Pro model is that is indeed a rather high threshold to clear. By the end of this review you will not only have a firm idea on what each model has to offer, but which will be right for your personal set of circumstances, needs, requirements… and even wants. So, without further preamble let’s take this beauty for a spin. Read Full Review

Interesting question. Yes they do state in their specs sheet pdf that you can download. The tricky thing is... its only in the PDF. So it could be changed out at a later date. However, considering LaCie is Seagate and the new drive would have to meet the same specs it is unlikely that they would change it to a worse drive. Most likely if they do change it, they will change the model name. That is usually how Seagate and LaCie do things. This is the spec sheet for the 2TB'er and it too says what they use: https://www.lacie.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/lacie-rugged-ssd-pro-DS2017-2-2001US-en_CA.pdf

*Full disclosure = this is not my first time I just so happen to have Cool Labs Liquid Ultra on hand not to mention a Rockit Cool delidder* And I am back up and running!!! Preliminary results are AMAZING! Check out these load temps taken the same way as before! Yowza Curious how the delid procedure went? It was super easy. I am sure that the TIM was totally "let go" under the IHS. Substantially less force was needed than what I know to be normal. I believe that I only needed enough shearing force to overcome the IHS adhesive because the TIM was not stuck to the cpu die whatsoever. This is what it looked like immediately after delidding. Looks like garbage TIM to me. Next I cleaned it up as good as I thought was needed. Note that it does look like I could have done better on the IHS but it was suuuuper smooth already despite what it may look like. Here I applied the "CLU" Next I used the Rockit Cool to relid the cpu using Gorilla Gel Super Glue to bond the two together. There you have it. A delidded, Liquid Metal'd and relidded 8700k The only reason I was unsure about delidding is because personal history has taught me that some people do not want to buy a used delidded cpu.

Made this tonight really liked it so thought I would share above is the end product and I will explain at the end my additions and westernization that makes it pretty damn good. Here is the recipe I started with Takes. 30 minutes of active prep. 6 to 12 hours refrigeration. Approximately 2 1/4 hours to smoke. Special tools. Disposable aluminum roasting pan. Serve with. Pinot Noir or Merlot. Ingredients 1 whole duck (approximately 5 pounds) 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon honey 1/2 teaspoon Morton’s coarse kosher salt per pound of meat (learn more about the science of salt here) 1 teaspoon baking powder Mandarin pancakes Hoisin sauce 6 scallions, thinly sliced About the rice vinegar. This is less strong, about 4% acetic acid, than most commercial white vinegars or even cider vinegar, which are often 6% or more. Most good groceries sell it as either plain or seasoned. Get the plain. If you must use white vinegar or cider vinegar, add a couple of tablespoons more water. About the baking powder. Seasoning duck with a combination of baking powder and salt is a technique inspired by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt of SeriousEats.com. The mixture not only helps draw additional moisture from the duck but also raises the pH level, thereby ensuring evenly browned and crispy skin during the roasting process. About the Mandarin pancakes. Sometimes labeled moo shu pancakes or Chinese pancakes, these small, thin pancakes are available at most international grocery stores. Alternatively, there are countless recipes for home made pancakes including this one from Nigella.com. About the Hoisin sauce. This thick sweet and salty sauce is a common glaze and dipping sauce in Chinese cuisine. It can be found in the international section of most major grocery stores. Method 1) Prep. Remove the giblets, neck, and sauce packet from the duck’s cavity. 2) Starting on the cavity side, gently work your fingers under the skin to separate the skin and flesh. 3) Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Set the duck on a rack in the sink and ladle the hot water over the duck to tighten the skin, flipping it halfway through the process. 4) Prick the skin of the duck all over with the tip of a paring knife or metal skewer to help the fat drain more easily. 5) Combine the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and honey in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 15 seconds to liquefy the honey. Stir well to combine the ingredients. Brush the mixture all over the duck. 6) Combine the salt and baking powder in a small bowl. Mix well and sprinkle the mixture over the entire duck. 7) Refrigerate the duck uncovered on an elevated rack for at least six hours and up to overnight so that the skin can air dry. Where I change things The original is smoked and it's -40 outside so unless a lost toe and ear is worth duck which to me it is not lets switch this to the oven Set oven to 350 for 30 minutes with duck in a roasting pan without a grate, but no top, after 30 min drain a little grease about 3 tsp and then set the oven to 325 and cook for about 1-2 hours mattering size checking the breast every 30 min to get a temp between 160-170 no hotter or it will be dry. Now while it is cooking I used this recipe start to finish to make the mandarin pancakes super simple and turn out great 8 oz. (1-3/4 cups) unbleached, all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup boiling water 1 Tbs. toasted sesame oil boil the water and in a bowl mix the boiled water and flour together till evenly mixed put the flour and water mixture on a lightly floured counter or cutting board, need it for about a minute with your hands make it into a ball, cover it in a towel for 30 minutes after 30 minutes knead the mix a few times till it is evenly mixed then with your hands roll it out into a long snake like I know you did as a child with play doh, make it about 12" long, once that is done cut 1" pucks out of the snake of dough and you should get 12 of them. then flatten out each of the dough pucks till they are around 2-3" each cover one side of each of them with the oil using a brush put 2 piece of dough together with the oil sides facing each other then roll them out with a rolling pin till they are 5-6" round each then heat a non oiled pan on medium high and toss them in 1 sandwich at a time, when they get lightly browned on the points touching the pan (about 30 seconds) flip them, another 30 seconds then you should remove your first sandwich and be able to peel them apart put the done warm ones into tin foil and start on the next ones. all done that part With set aside grease dump it in a pan and set it to medium high, get veggies of your choice I used red onions, peppers and normal onions a tsp flour, some salt and pepper tossed them together then when the grease is spurting hot throw the veggies in to cook for a few min till soft now time to serve it all up following is photos of me making and finishing it

This bad boy was made from dumpster dive parts, old mining parts and free random parts. I3 7100 Prime H270 plus asus mobo 4gb ddr4 2133 120gb Kingston ssd 250gb sata HDD Rx 460 4gb xfx gpu 350w psu Rig loaded up windows 10 fine now updating then going to use this board for 2 videos. 1 to do with building and selling used systems. The other to do with a improvement of basic compound over intel stock compound from whenever this board and CPU were merged into one haha. More updates to come soon

Nice. I wonder if my local recycling place would do something like that. I would love to put together random computers for the fun of it. cover ces and Christmas...that’s going to be a few bucks. Good luck!
  43. 1 point
Question 1 junk parts, they came from a ecycler toss out near my work being the case and psu, they also got me a bunch of other parts including the ram and board plus CPU from a contact they had that did the same mass mining rig order my work did so it was pretty much free, traded some parts. 460 was from my mining rig same with ssd and small HDD was from the recyclers to. Today during testing CPU never even hit 70c with stock compound still. Question 2 plans, either sell or donate need to pay down a lot of stuff plus cover ces and Xmas so gotta sell a few rigs. Test 1 with this will be "how much does new compound help temps?" Can a I3 7100 and Rx 460 4gb game? Then a selling of the rig video most likely. Have another very similar rig to this one in a nicer case with a Rx 570 I will be selling as well.
  44. 1 point
Nice one. Out of curiosity, I get the “old mining parts”, but where did you acquire “dumpster dive” and “free random” parts? Should be a great basic build for someone later. What’s the long term plan for it?

A very random purchase for me today. I was looking at a local auction site and ended up getting an ex government hp elite 8200 sff with 4gb ram, i5 2400, 22" FHD monitor, keyboard and mouse, dvi and dp cables for $70 ($82 after auction fees). The only thing missing was an hdd, so I grabbed a cheap sandisk plus 120gb for $65 after tax locally. It had a win 7 pro key in it, which just validated a win 10 pro install :) . No idea what it will be used for yet, but I love a deal. On the table opened up: The HDD caddy went with the drive, so a quick Velcro mod for the ssd: Cleaned out and ready to close up: Good to go:
