Time to delid 8700K?

Recommended Posts

My 8700k is running hotter and hotter. 2 Days ago I cleaned my computer case, reapplied TIM and temps are not better. I have now tried lowering vcore to 1.2v and clocking down 4.8Ghz. I have 12 security cams that record all night (8hrs per day) and with ~40% cpu load while recording my temps are just too high (around 70-80C). Running Aida64 stress test I have some cores at ~55C and some at ~100C!!! My fans are running at 100% under Aida64 stress test in my HAF X. The 8700k uses an NH-D15 FYI

Is it time to delid this thing? Should I sell it and try to replace it?

damn those are crazy high temps, should join us at LTX2020 there is a delidding booth.

I am so fearful of delidding new Intel cpus as their pcb are paper thin now with my luck would crack in half.

You have a good cooler and everything else on it to so fully agree a delid seems to be the only next option or swap for another cpu

good luck and godspeed!

Yikes. With those temp splits it really sounds like a bad mount or insufficient TIM. Worth one more re-mount attempt before you de-lid?

If you are already going for it....fingers crossed it goes well for you.

*Full disclosure = this is not my first time 😉  I just so happen to have Cool Labs Liquid Ultra on hand not to mention a Rockit Cool delidder*

And I am back up and running!!! Preliminary results are AMAZING! Check out these load temps taken the same way as before! Yowza

Curious how the delid procedure went? It was super easy. I am sure that the TIM was totally "let go" under the IHS. Substantially less force was needed than what I know to be normal. I believe that I only needed enough shearing force to overcome the IHS adhesive because the TIM was not stuck to the cpu die whatsoever. This is what it looked like immediately after delidding. Looks like garbage TIM to me.

Next I cleaned it up as good as I thought was needed. Note that it does look like I could have done better on the IHS but it was suuuuper smooth already despite what it may look like.

Here I applied the "CLU"

Next I used the Rockit Cool to relid the cpu using Gorilla Gel Super Glue to bond the two together.

There you have it. A delidded, Liquid Metal'd and relidded 8700k 🙂  The only reason I was unsure about delidding is because personal history has taught me that some people do not want to buy a used delidded cpu.

Anyone know how to OC an 8700k? Ring bus this and AVX that... I am not expert. Right now I am at 5.2Ghz with manual vcore of 1.29v

Ran Cinebench R20 and R15. I am surprised how well my R5 3600's do considering their 1Ghz per core speed deficit. Amazing!

Impressive results that really show how bad the intel factory stuff is...also incredible how the 3600 runs. Ryzen is the way to go for now.

Personally, after you are done benching, I would opt for an eye pleasing 5.0ghz and try to get the voltage as low as possible.

That sounds like a good idea. I think I will get below 1.3v at 5.0Ghz. I will post back shortly

1.28v is working 5Ghz.. so far.

This puter is my main baby. It records 8 hrs a night and I use it during the day. I could clock lower but I like the idea of 5Ghz if nothing else. As is under full load the computer is cool (mid 60C) and quiet (fans are running 500-1000 rpm).

I do have the right tools and they will soon be obsolete. 😞   Anyone need something delidded??
