Everything Hardware / Asus Z97-Pro (WiFi ac) bios update fail

My Asus Z97-Pro (WiFi ac) have bios v2303:

So I load the new bios (all the more recent bioses anyway) on USA flash:

I picked up the latest one (v2702) and tried... upload it, then I get "not a proper BIOS" message:

NONE of the bioses I tested (v2401, v2501, v2601 and v2702) worked. All I download directly from Asus site: could SOMEBODY tell me, what is going on?!

Next thing - let's try the mainboard function of USB BIOS Flashback - I put into the proper port (page 2-14 "bottom port supports USB BIOS Flashback") USB drive with file in the root directory, renamed by the BRenamerl.exe utility to "Z97P.CAP")

After power up, I hold the BIOS_FLBK button for 3+ seconds and I expected to see 3 blinks of the LED and beggining of the flash proces, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPEND.

The last attempt to flash bios update on Asus Z97-Pro (WiFi ac) was my attempt to boot from USB flash. Formated as DOS bootable device (or DrDOS) and in both attempts failed. Even afer disconnecting both SATA devices (HDD + DVD).

So the mainboard works, but it did not see the Samsung SM951 (MZ - HPV1280) M.2 128G SSD is not seen as device in bios or HDD prep programs like Mini Tool Partition Wizard Pro. Any help is need:

...perhaps it is just me, doing something wrong?

I wonder, how fast these DDR3 rams can go - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series F3-14900CL8D-8GBXM:

And what chips they use - so if there is a chance for getting them run faster with more voltage - and what is the safe (or reasonably safe?) voltage limit for them.

That, of course, apply only when the chips used react well to more voltage. So, since the G.Skill logo claims "Go Beyond Limits", then I put these poor rams into Asus Z97-Pro (WiFi ac) board. Upon activating the XMP profile by switch on the board, the rams run at 8-9-9-24 2T @ 1866MHz.

The 2T can be changed to 1T and at that point, it gives with not overclocked i7 4790K, 21 739MB/sec in Memtest 4.20. The voltage is default 1.50V. When tried to set the DDR3-2000MHz memory clock settings, the board failed to post. 1866 seems to be the maximum at such settings (rest is on auto ATM). Precise settings are bellow (most "auto" values report what they are in the bios, what is marked with "???" is not shown up - does not show it's current settig in the bios).

The question is - of course - what best settings to use for these rams (there seems to be plenty of settings, including skews) and what one can expect to get from them on tight timings. Or if relaxing the timings help to get higher and that produce faster result...?
I checked the DDR3 ram chips list there:
...yet the closest I found was: PC3-14900 Ripjaws X
F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL (2x4GB) - 9-10-9-28 @ 1.5V - Hynix H5TQ2G83CFR-H9C

Close, but no hit. So that is not exactly helpfull. And since the rams run cold (several memtest hours) at 1.50V, then I believe they might like more voltage :) So the question is only how much, or what settings will be optimal to use to get them higher. IIRC the framerate in games stop increasing at about 2100MHz, so reaching the 2000 would be cool.

Is this possible?

Help Wanted / Suggestions for mid power QUIET gaming PC

I have a quick (yet tricky) question: what mainboard & coolers do you guys think, that will be good for me, when I want to build this:

- around 3.8 - 4GHz 4core (no HT for lower TDP) Intel machine with the Haswell-E core (22nm) for lowest TDP
- Win7 gaming only, at first GTX 960, later perhaps Nano
- PSU eVGA 850W Supernova G2 (good experience and ripple-free voltage & quiet operation - cannot heat it = good)
- 8G of nice fast DDR3 memory to get the power need
- M.2 SSD onboard
- VERY QUIET operation required (therefore modification of GPU cooling to be done with 2x 120mm Noiseblocker 1000 RPM fans - just need a giant heatsinks for this :) )

The aim is to build a QUIET gaming system. So I need a CPU, that could be cooled with unhearable from 1,5m cooling solution. Either hi-end Noctua (NH-C14S) or - if it will be more silent - some AIO cooling solution?
There is no other requirments. Just decent power and quier operation. That is all.

I probably ask some overclockers for second hand CPU, that is not a good clocker, BUT it can run on lowest voltage settings stable at the 3.,8 - 4GHz clock (turbo off - or all the time on at the max clock).

To save space and cables, M.2 SSD will be used for OS/need apps, for rest 1T WB Black. PSU is determined, case will be Phanteks Enthoo Pro white.

For the GTX 960 I would like a seriously overpowered heatsink (or AIO?), that let me install 2x Noiseblocker 120mm fans. I cannot hear them at 1000rpm in case, rest there case fans will be Noiseblockers 750rpm ones & the massive Phanteks Enthoo Pro intake fan. That it is. But dunno what GPU cooler is to choose from...?

Suggestions welcome.

I'm inclined to think, that a 22nm i7-4790K might be with 88W TDP a good idea... but since I did not need the HyperThreading (4 cores, 8 threads) and the IGP, then I wonder, if I can get lower TDP CPU with similar CPU power, capable or running at 4GHz w/o too much voltage?

Less voltage = lesser TDP = quietier operation.

Could someone suggest a CPU, that I can cool at low RPM on CPU fan (say 750 to 1000 RPM), witch means that it will be quiet?

I mean to use either Noctua NH-C14S (this cool well the CPU VRMs!) or the Phanteks PH-TC14PE (with one fan between all the massive heatsinks) ... but in the later case I worry a bit about the CPU VRMs.

...but on the other hand, good news is, that the CPU could be a terrible overclocker with wall at 4.1GHz - all I care is the lowest TDP up to 4GHz. Maybe I can cool only 3.8GHz quietly, so... if the voltage is seriously low, then a 3.8GHz is enought ;)

That CPU would determine the mainboard then, right?

Old cards, like nVidia Vanta LT 16MB:

...have no holes around GPU, so that any cooler must be glued on them by some heat conductive glue.

Such glues are for example supplied with the Arctic Cooler Mono Plus VGA heatsink. But when I tried to use it today, I find out, that both tubes - altrough never used before - turned internaly into chewing-gum :mad: :mad: :mad:

That is somewhat surprising to pierce a never opened thermal adhesive to find out, that it is completely useless...

So that makes me wonder, what others use and with what experiences. Because I need some replacement... ;)

Guys, I looking out for rams with the legendary Samsung TCCD chips, that are 2x1024MB and of course capable of running at 2-2-2-5 + tight advanced timings (like Interleave 8 bank, TRFC - 9, TRRD - 2, TRTP - 2, TWTR - 1 and TWR - 2), as my OCZ OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K rams can do it, only with the unfortunate exceptions of TRCD - 3 and 4 bank interleave (so they are suxxking 2-3-2-5). 1T, of course.

The only good news is, that such timings are need at 200MHz :p


From the list of DDR1 rams: it seems, that some chances are in AData Vitesta DDR566/600 (I did not say DDR500, as these I got and are not good at all, req. 2T and 2.5-3-3-8 timings are IMHO horrible - clearly not TCCD), but mainly I looking at:

News / ASRock make Skylake with DDR3 (DDR3L) possible

ASRock announced board B150M Combo-G mainboard with Socket 1151 and ram support for DDR4 2133 / DDR3 1866 (OC), up to 32G:

Of course, you cannot combine the DDR4/DDR3 rams, but the sole possibility of running Skylake with DDR3 might result in some interesting scores. Or at least interesting regults in general. Altrough not mentioned on the case, the board will support also DDR3L, as Skylake does support them too ;)

Other that this it is not very interesting board: chipset is Intel B150, two PCIe 3.0 ×16 slots (CrossFire), one PCIe 3.0 ×1 slot. 6 x SATA3 and one SATA Express for HDD's, six USB v3, two USB v2, Giga NIC and the usual audo and video connectors.

They could be even a bit limiting, as Skylake support HW acceleration of 4k content, even the best output can do only 30fps at 3840×2160 or 24fps at 4096×2160 resolution.

So for 4k usage - get a dedicated graphic ;)

I wonder, if anyone have in operation slower HDD :D


Therefore I wonder, if someone have a experience with replacing such SLOOOW HDDs with PATA to CF adapter and CF card(s)? The latest models promise very fast speeds - 160MB/sec is quite above PATA possibilities:

...and since the adapters are just wires, connecting the CF card to PATA interface (CF cards work on same PATA interface!) and only in best cases, you can choose the voltage (3.3V or 5V) and you get the power and activity lights:

...then there should not be any problem of using CF cards as old PATA HDD replacement(s). Only problem I hear, that there should be changed bit on the card somewhere, that change the device type from removable to fixed. Then it should act as normal HardDriveDevice.

But maybe I missed something...? Do anyone have experience with this? Could someone share tips, software for the change (from removable to fixed) and experience in general?

This is another 775 mobo I get for the sole purpose of fun and pushing the AGP limit(s) with some serious CPU's. The mobo does support not only AGP, but also PCIe and not only DDR(1) rams, but DDR2 as well:

So, it is a remarkable piece of hardware :) Also after updating the bios to latest official P3.10 version ( ), there are plenty of bios options to play. More that I imagined:

And that is not all! There are existing modified bioses ( ) that since v3.10a give the possibility to boost the maximum supported ram from 2G (2x1G, you cannot use DDR and DDR2 rams at once, lol) to 4G (2x2G sticks). Current unofficial bios version is 3.19a.

Of course the really available ram on 32bit systems are something around 3.3GBy (all the buffers and your GFX card memory must fit into 4G address space), but it is still a good leap forward, compared to being stuck with "just 2G of ram."

What attract me on the board is 4 phase regulator and good overclockability. When the poor Celeron D 336 on ASRock 775i65G R3.0 hit the wall at FSB 154 ( ), the same CPU is not having problems at FSB 164 with this mobo ( ) and when pushed beyond stability, then 175MHz FSB is possible:

Sure, sure, 3677MHz from 2.8GHz CPU is nothing spectacular, but w/o incrasing the Vcore it is not actually bad ;) And it looks like that incrasing Vcore could be done by just replacing one SMD resistor with zero resistance to another SMD resistor:

That is quite good and what it even better is, that near the CPU socket, there are place for 4 (!) stolen CAPS for Vcore regulator! That empty places could get very nice polymer (and small-enought to fit under the heatsink mount) caps. And on the bottom side, there is place just under the CPU for two serious tantal-polymer caps :nana:

So I see a big potencial in this mobo. Just if I understand the settings a bit... :D

PS. flashing bios is a "little" nightmare, the mobo refuse to boot from CD I create (all other computers do boot), USB flash... and when it finally boot from floppy, not even uniflash was able to flash the bios...! So beware, you really need to use the Windows flasher and NOT latest version but v4.xx (v4.48 from there works: ) as mentioned in this guide (page 2):

That is looking pretty damn good :) Enrgic effectivity should be ~1.9x over R9 390X and ~1.4x over Fury X. These Fiji chips is are made with new 28nm process called HPX, but there is little information about it at all.

nVidia loses in Ashes of the Singularity Direct X 12 bechmark and started lying about it instead of work on their drivers harder!

The problem? nVidia negative performance scale between DX11 and DX12. Everyone expect DX12 to be faster, however on nVidia cards it is now slower.
Nvidia’s strong performance in DX11, however, is overshadowed by negative scaling in DirectX 12 and the complete non-existence of any MSAA bug.

Since this is indeed a PR nightmare, then nVidia is even sending out emails, claiming lies.

Lie no. 1:
Ashes of Singularity has an application-side bug for MSAA running the DX12 executable on GeForce GPUs. Note that MSAA is enabled by default when you select the ‘low’, ‘medium’, ‘high’, and ‘crazy’ presets on the DirectX 12 version. As a result, benchmark runs using these presets are invalid.

No, there is no MSAA bug that slow-down the game on nVidia cards specificaly. In fact, there is no MSAA bug at all, as we can all see on the enlarged screenshots:

Lio no. 2:
Ashes of the Singularity is an alpha benchmark released by Oxide... this alpha benchmark is primarily useful to understand how your system runs... there will be better examples of true DirectX 12 performance... When accurate DX12 metrics arrive, the story will be the same as it was for DX11...

Never had been in history benchmark of real game with real situations deemed "invalid" on the basic that the code will change in future. What will change will be the nVidia drivers, that is for sure, if they did not want looks like they cannot do serious DX12 performance.
It is a lie to claim the benchmark "inaccurate", when they seen the code for over a year and did not complain or state that it is wrong before:
both Nvidia and AMD compile our very latest changes on a daily basis and have been running our application in their labs for months

So, again as with the 3.5G GTX 970 fiasco, nVidia go for the "flat out lie" option. Instead of admiting that either their hardware is too much optimized for DX11 and cannot handle DX12 features - or their drivers aren't ready yet, their reaction was flat out lie they paddle out by means close to spammers. Most developers did not care about nVidia explaining what, according to THEM, went wrong.

So what AMD Fury X is faster that GTX 980 ti by just a small margin in DX12 test, they react like it was the end of the world. It looks like a childish reaction, unsuitable for mature company, that when R9 390X beat (closely, but beat) GTX 980 on high settings and DX12 (GTX 980 do 35.9fps, while R9 390 X do 36.9fps), then it have to be deemed invalid:

So, witch scores will be valid, according to nVidia? Only scores that somehow show 20% lead of the GTX 980 ti over Fury X in DX12?

Conclusion: lies about GTX 970 are not exception, but a new normal for nVidia. And that are sad new for all of us, whatever we stand on the AMD vs nVidia fanbattle.


Everything Hardware / ASRock 775i65G R3.0 - mod and recap?

I wanted board that support AGP and the Core 2 Duo CPU's, especially the Core 2 Extreme X6800 for AGP benching. Dunno if that was a good choice, but the first board I get for this purpose is ASRock 775i65G R3.0. It does not look like much:

...but it promise support for the FSB 1066 on the fast CPUs. I ordered a Core 2 Extreme X6800 ( ), some fast rams should be moving towards me too ( ), so what remain is a good cooler, PSU and let's the journey begin :D

At first I tried a lazy old Celeron 336 (2.8GHz) and some crapy rams (2x 512MB Mushkin enhanced 2.5-4-4-9 tested at 200MHz):

The board is completely stock, except that I get rid of the stickers and the "bubble gum" for the chipset cooler, replaced with AS2.

There did not seems to be a way to increase Vcore in bios and using a stock Intel cooler I hit wall at 154MHz FSB (x21) pretty soon:

Now we can all quess, what that caused. Not enought Vcore? Celeron having a problem going over 3.2GHz? Poor cooling? Poor old FSP300-60NP PSU? Rams? (they should not be the case, as I tested them with the timings (except TRAS 9, this board did not let me set over 8) at 200MHz)

Never the less, I started measuring on the mobo what caps I can replace with quality ones. There is the table of caps and voltages on ASRock 775i65G R3.0:

Including original .ai file (Illustrator 7), if anyone want to use/print it for own moding.

Surprisingly, the board have zero caps from the bottom. And since it have only 5Vcore output caps, then I have to come up with some mod that add caps to the Vcore output, as this is IMHO not enought caps for only 3 phase Vcore regulation.

Still, people managed max FSB 352MHz:

For these poor souls, who did not have airconditioning (or computer testing room lack this feature) or their A/C suxx - I have to say that it is kinda sweaty to work in 28°C room temperature and about 35% humidity :P

But my computers have to be keept cool, so I take radical measures :) Even overclocking requires a "little bit" more cooling recently. Dunno how do you guys do it, but I do it this way:

Yet I feel like that I will be soon cooked alive :D Temps are closing to 40°C somewhere ( ) and in shadow, my thermometer showing 35°C outside and they constantly promising storm, but nothing...

nVidia GTX 950 is one step closer to being released. There are pictures of the reference model shown: well, as the PNY GTX 950 using non-reference cooler:

There is no informations about specs, but since it have to be slower that GTX 960, then it widely assumed, that the card will feature lower number of stream processors that GTX 960 (likely 768 instead of  1024). Bus is likely to remain at 128bits, number of ROP units is unclear - either 32 or 16.

Another specs are quessed:
clock 1150-1250 MHz?
boost clock 1350-1450 MHz?
TMUs 48?
2-4G 128bit ram @ 6.6 - 6.8GHz
About 90W TDP
6-pin power and PCIe v3 x16, DVI-I, DVI-D, DP and HDMI outputs :)

Prices will be about 3/4 of the GTX 960 prices. It is a card near the low-end today, after all :)

Still going on the reliable 40nm process (a big thumb up for that), Samsung now come with there intesting SSD lines.

1) PM953 line, witch is either classic 2.5' SSDs with SATA Express, or M.2 cards with capacitances 480, 960 and 1920GB (M.2 capacity goes to only 480/960GB)

2) PM1633 line, witch, thanks to the 12Gbit/s SAS interface aims for the professionals (or mad overclockers?). Samsung say they made up to 160k IOPS for random read, 18k IOPS for random write, sequentional reading 1.1 GB/s and write up to 1.0 GB/s. I would say "cool", but that is just me :) Capacity range goes from 480 to 3840GB.

3) PM1725 line is the best. It comes as either 2.5' SSDs or PCI Express 3.0 cards. Extra large capacty 3200 to 6400GB goes par in par with up to 1 000k IOPS for reading and 120k IOPS for random write. (PCMark 05/Vantage anyone? :) ) Reading speeds are bumped to 5.5GB/s, writing do 1.8GB/s.
With the 6400GB varians Samsung show longetivity also - 32TB of writting per day for 5 years, witch translate to 5 complete overwrites per day, or about ~58,4PB of written data.

This is impressive at least for combined V-NAND chips. Only we are not informed, of theyare SLC, MLC or TLC... I would hope for MLC, as the Samsung 850 PRO line have... but we see ;)
